Harold Hayes is a composer, performer, and musicologist. He is a dual master's student at Bowling Green State University, where he studies composition and ethnomusicology. He graduated magna cum laude from the University of Louisiana-Lafayette with a Bachelor of Arts degree in music with a concentration in music theory and composition. As a composer, Hayes writes music in a wide variety of styles and formats, primarily exploring quintal harmony in contrast with open resonances in the harmonic series.
As a trumpet performer, he has performed across the United States of America and Western Australia for a variety of occasions, especially across the states of Ohio, Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida, and Alabama. These performances have ranged from military ceremonies at the USS Alabama to world premieres with the Mid American Center for Contemporary Music. He currently studies with Professor Charles Saenz and is a member of the BGSU Afro-Caribbean and North African ensembles. He also conducts and performs with the BGSU chapter of the International Trumpet Guild. At UL Lafayette, he was a recipient of the Friends of Music scholarship, the Evelyn Elizabeth Lochman Endowed Scholarship, and the Marc Breaux Endowed Scholarship in recognition of his trumpet performance.
Hayes' research employs historical and ethnomusicogical methods to understand ancient soundscapes and religious acoustemologies. He has presented with BGSU's Student Organization for Music Research on the political and theological functions of hymnody in the fourth century church including the extant hymns of Arius, Hilary of Potiers, Ambrose of Milan, and Ephraem Syrus. He has also been invited to give talks on hymnology and church history at First Baptist Church and the H20 church in Bowling Green. His current research focuses on the monastic soundscapes in eighth-century Egyptian monasteries.
